How to Feel Comfortable and Confident Before Your Photoshoot
This photoshoot confidence guide is for everyday men and women who want to feel confident in front of the camera and enjoy the experience.
Welcome
If you’re reading this, you’re probably thinking about having a photoshoot and feeling a mixture of excitement and nerves.
That’s completely normal.
Almost every client I work with tells me the same things at the start:
“I’m not very confident.”
“I’m awkward in front of a camera.”
“I don’t know what to do.”
And yet, nearly all of them leave saying something like:
“Wow… I didn’t think I could look like that.”
This photoshoot confidence guide is here to help you understand what to expect, how to prepare, and how to feel more relaxed before you even step into the studio. It has been written to answer the questions most people quietly carry with them before their first shoot.
Rather than guessing or worrying, this photoshoot confidence guide gives you clear, honest insight into the experience, so you can arrive feeling informed, prepared, and reassured.
No pressure. No sales talk. Just honest guidance.
“I was so nervous before I arrived, but within minutes Pete made me feel completely at ease. I couldn’t believe how relaxed I became.”
1. How the Process Works
One of the main aims of this photoshoot confidence guide is to remove uncertainty. Most people simply want to know what’s going to happen before they commit to anything, and that’s completely understandable.
By clearly explaining each stage, this photoshoot confidence guide helps you feel confident in the process long before your shoot begins.
We’ll chat first, usually by message and then by phone, to understand what you’d like from your shoot, where you’d like to shoot (studio, gym, or another location), and what you want to use the images for.
From there, we’ll agree what suits you best, choose a date, and get you booked in. Before your shoot, I’ll send preparation advice. After the shoot, you’ll receive your proof gallery online, choose your favourites, and I’ll carefully edit and deliver your final images. You’re supported at every stage and nothing is rushed.
“Pete was professional from start to finish. He really took the time to understand exactly what I was looking for and made sure I left the shoot knowing I had everything I needed.”
2. What My Studio Is Like?
My studio is designed to feel calm, private, and comfortable.
It’s a large, fully equipped space in a secure, gated area in Plymouth, with parking right outside. It’s just me and whoever you choose to bring with you. There are changing facilities, a makeup area, a toilet, a coffee machine, and usually some music playing in the background to keep things relaxed.
Most people are surprised by how informal it feels.
Before I even pick up a camera, we sit down and have a proper chat. We get to know each other a little, talk through the plan, and make sure you’re comfortable.
You’re never rushed straight into posing.
“I hadn’t done a photoshoot like this before and was nervous — Pete was friendly, reassuring and made me feel comfortable and at ease very quickly.”
3. What to Wear (Without Stress)
One of the most common worries people have is what to wear.
My best advice is simple: plan a little, but bring options.
Bring more than you think you’ll need. We’ll decide together on the day what works best for you and for the style of images you want.
In general, all colours work. Logos are fine. The most important thing is that you feel like yourself and feel good in what you’re wearing.
For fitness shoots, men often bring shorts or gym wear, and women usually bring fitted gym clothing. Some people choose lingerie, and some later choose artistic nude work if their confidence grows. That’s always your choice.
There is never any pressure to do anything you’re not comfortable with.
You are always in control.
“Pete gave great encouragement and guidance throughout. He showed me how lighting and angles were working so I could see myself improving.”
4. You Don’t Need to Know How to Pose
This is one of the biggest fears people have.
“I don’t know what to do with my hands.”
“I’m rubbish at posing.”
“I’ll look stupid.”
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.
The good news is, you don’t need to know how to pose.
That’s my job.
I’ll demonstrate poses, let you mirror me, adjust small details, guide you constantly, and encourage you throughout. I’ll talk you through everything and show you what’s working.
At first, it might feel a bit strange.
Then you’ll see the first images on the screen.
And suddenly, things start to click.
You trust the process.
“I was anxious about having my photo taken, but Pete was brilliant and made sure I felt at ease. I would highly recommend him.”
5. Feeling Awkward Is Normal (At First)
Almost everyone feels awkward at the beginning.
This is exactly why this photoshoot confidence guide exists. Feeling awkward, unsure, or out of place at first is completely normal, and it’s something almost every client experiences before finding their confidence.
That’s human.
You’re doing something new. You’re stepping outside your comfort zone.
People often say to me:
“It feels weird.”
“I’m nervous.”
“This isn’t me.”
And then, usually within the first ten or fifteen minutes, something changes.
You relax.
You start enjoying it.
You begin to see yourself differently.
Watching that transformation happen is one of my favourite parts of the job.
“I was so nervous beforehand, but Pete made me feel relaxed and comfortable — the shots ended up better than I could have ever imagined.”
6. My Photography Style
My style is dramatic, sculpted, and designed to show your best features.
I use lighting carefully to emphasise shape, muscle, curves, and structure. Nothing is random. Everything is intentional.
I don’t heavily alter bodies.
I don’t try to change who you are.
My aim is to show you at your very best, not to create something unrealistic.
“Phenomenal photoshoot. You can see why he is the go-to guy for this style of photography in the southwest — truly excellent.”
7. About Pricing and Value
When you book with me, you’re not just paying for photos.
You’re paying for years of experience, professional equipment, a calm and supportive environment, careful direction, detailed editing, and a complete, considered experience.

“100% recommend Pete! He made me feel at ease and delivered amazing photos — professional and supportive throughout.”
8. Why I Do This
I do this because I genuinely love it.
There is nothing better than seeing someone look at their images and say:
“Oh my god… is that really me?”
Watching confidence grow during a shoot is incredible. Seeing clients proudly share their photos afterwards makes me proud.
It never gets old.
That’s why I take my time.
That’s why I don’t rush.
That’s why I care.
“Pete’s knowledge, experience and professionalism are second to none. I was amazed with the results — truly thrilled!”
9. Who My Shoots Are Best For?
This photoshoot confidence guide is for people who are nervous but brave, open-minded, and willing to trust the process. It’s for those who want to feel prepared, supported, and confident before stepping in front of the camera.
You don’t need confidence before you arrive. This photoshoot confidence guide is designed to help you build it through the experience itself.
You don’t need confidence before you arrive.
Confidence comes from the experience itself.
“I was anxious at first, but five minutes in, I didn’t feel nervous at all — Pete quickly put me at ease and made it a great experience.”
10. A Few Important Boundaries
To give every client the best possible experience, there are a few things I don’t do.
I don’t rush sessions.
I don’t offer cheap mini shoots.
I don’t heavily change bodies in editing.
I don’t create unrealistic results.
My work is about honesty, quality, and pride in what we create together.
“There was never any rush and no pressure. It felt very professional and relaxed.”
